Chasing the Cure

The battle with Tuberculosis on the Canadian Prairie.

CHASING THE CURE is set at Fort San, Saskatchewan's first tuberculosis sanatorium. There, before the discovery of antibiotics, the only cure was rest and fresh air. Patients "chased cure" out on the balconies, in any weather, 40 above or 40 below, often for years. CHASING THE CURE is a one hour documentary with dramatic inserts, the story of the resourcefulness and inner strength of those who survived tuberculosis in those days.

Using excerpts from the 1929 diary of 17 year old Fort San patient Ernest Hande, interviews with former San patients, staff, and residents, as well as archival stills and 1933 film footage, CHASING THE CURE evokes an era long gone, when tuberculosis was the number one killer in the world, and when the battle against it was fought on a community level as well as a personal one.
